I've been doing a lot of marathon programming sessions lately, and it has reminded me of the importance of exercise.

I have a training partner and we lift weights 4 time a week.  With all the programming I do, even that's not enough.  I've noticed that I get particularly restless and irritable especially in the winter months.  Since it's a bit hard to get out for a walk or jog on icy sidewalks, I have a decent treadmill that seems to do the trick.  I've been feeling a lot better and less stressed since I increased my use of the treadmill.  I get back my creativity and positive attitude after 30 to 40 minutes of speed-walking or jogging.

One thing I believe is that your mind and body want and need exercise.  They are designed to expect some amount of exercise, and therefore are thrown off balance when getting much less exercise than expected.

So my strong advice for game fans and developers alike is: get at least 30 to 40 minutes of brisk exercise per day, if not more.  I consider it essential for an overall good, healthy attitude.

I do a 4 kilometre run every morning, and have for the last... long time.

That takes about 30 minutes.
